My left-turner's tools
To get my first steps into left-turning I simply worked with some small wood sculptor's tools but step by step I developed my own set of tools and I like it so much. I often use it also for bigger work done on the "normal" lathe.
My set constists of five tools. These are from above to bottom of Fig. 1:
A roughing gouge, made of an old skulptor's tool
A detail gouge, made of an old skulptor's tool
An oval chisse,l made made of an etcher's needle
A skev chissel, made of an old skulptor's tool
A parting tool, made of an old kittchen knife
Novadays almost all makers of turning tools offer a good range of small tools, called micro tools or toolsets for chess pieces. There is no need anymore to transmogrify your grandma's cuttlery!
